Bowman Academy made headlines when it was discovered by NWITimes.com that the basketball team played a player not enrolled at the school in November.
IHSAA commissioner Bobby Cox announced Friday that Bowman Academy was guilty of 11 IHSAA violations by the boy's basketball program this year. Those violations came after Bowman has committed many past rules infractions including over-scheduling, defaulting on game contracts and violating the travel restrictions for contests.
Bowman Academy has committed the following breaches - played a player that was not enrolled at the school; played a student that was in his fifth year of high school; played a student whose transfer report was falsified in order to provide full eligibility; played multiple students without transfer reports; played a student that is academically ineligible; played, at least, one contest without a signed and executed contract with a non-member school; the school has over-scheduled their boys' basketball schedule to exceed the maximum number of contests allowed; and the school has allowed multiple coaches to instruct students without meeting the minimum requirements of coach education as provided for in rule seven of the IHSAA Bylaws.
Cox said that the IHSAA pondered expulsion of Bowman Academy from the membership. The IHSAA decided to suspend Bowman from all IHSAA tournament series events in all sports for the remainder of the school year and throughout next school year.
Bowman's membership with the IHSAA is now on probationary status. This will include an assignment of an IHSAA staff member to serve as a mentor to the school.
The sanctions against Bowman Academy also include the basketball team forfeiting all of its games from the season.
